How do we honor Yoga's roots while meeting modern needs?
Props like the aerial hammock can help to make the physical benefits of yoga more accessible to more people - but how do we ensure we are enhancing rather than diluting or appropriating Yoga? While this is a main theme of Jo's book Eight Limbs of Aerial Yoga, it is a life long question rather than easy answer, and in this presentation we examine yoga history and the modern teaching landscape through a social justice lens.

On Aerial Yoga as Therapy with Jo Stewart
A Grateful Life Podcast with Dr Lauren Tober
Before I met Jo, my mental image of aerial yoga was mostly circus-like. Beautiful, yes. Fun, sure. Relevant to the yoga teachers and therapists I work with? I wasn’t convinced. Boy, was I wrong. Jo Stewart (she/her) is one of Australia’s most experienced aerial yoga teachers. She founded the Garden of Yoga studio in Northcote, Melbourne, co-hosts the Flow Artists Podcast, and has spent years developing a genuinely accessible, therapeutic approach to aerial yoga, one that understands that different brains and bodies need different pathways into regulation, rest and inner awareness. Her first book, Eight Limbs of Aerial Yoga, is published by Singing Dragon and is out now. Aerial yoga, it turns out, is not what I thought it was. The hammock in Jo’s practice is a prop, in the same spirit as a bolster or a block. For students who are neurodivergent, living with anxiety or PTSD, or who simply don’t find stillness regulating, aerial yoga can open up a whole range of options, like gentle rocking, cocooning, deep pressure, spinning, or closing the world out entirely, while still practising alongside others.

Yoga for Every Body: Chronic Pain, Neurodivergence, and the Power of Aerial Yoga with Jo Stewart
The Health Class She Deserves with Autumn Paone
I’ll be honest: for a long time, I thought aerial yoga was just a fun, circus-y way to do yoga. But after sitting down with Jo Stewart, Senior Yoga Teacher and author of Eight Limbs of Aerial Yoga, I realized I had it all wrong. For people living with chronic pain, neurodivergence, or PTSD, the hammock isn't just a prop, it’s a sanctuary. In this episode, Jo and I unpack why the Westernized, "fitness-first" approach to yoga is actually doing us a disservice and how we can reclaim movement as a tool for nervous system regulation, chronic pain (from endometriosis or something else), and our overall health. We dive deep into the specific benefits for female-bodied health, from managing mental health to autonomic balance to finding representation for conditions like endometriosis in the movement world.
